MacArthur Park – Richard Harris

MacArthur Park – Richard Harris

EDITOR’S NOTE: “Three Little Pigs” by Green Jelly was Jim Barton’s last foray into the world of heavy metal one-hit wonders. But did you think he would go gently into that good night? Sorry, no such luck.:) From time to time he will continue his contributions and adding to the wacky and wonderful world of One-Hit Wonders, starting with this famous song, “MacArthur Park,” by Richard Harris. A most delightful little book that should be on … Read entire article »

In the Mood – Henhouse Five Plus Too

In the Mood – Henhouse Five Plus Too

Few songs make me want to pay an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor to remove my ear drums. But “In the Mood” by Henhouse Five Plus Too is in serious contention. This novelty song is pure garbage. It’s stupid. It’s silly. It’s dumb enough that to hear it once is more than enough. Remarkably, “In the Mood” by Henhouse Five Plus Too reached #40 on the Billboard Top 40 in 1977 and that’s good enough to land … Read entire article »

Gee Whiz – Bernadette Peters

Gee Whiz – Bernadette Peters

Are you kidding me? “Gee Whiz” by Bernadette Peters is awful. Simply awful. Production-wise it’s a throwback to the 1950s with a 1970s sultry saxophone solo for about four bars in the middle section. Peters emotes and has the chops to hit all the right notes but somehow this song falls completely flat. It’s songs like these that make you both love and loathe Billboard pop music charts. “Gee Whiz” climbs all the way to … Read entire article »

Radioactive – The Firm

Radioactive – The Firm

Author’s note: Though I never owned either of The Firm’s two LPs, I have heard them in their entirety. And like many Led Zeppelin and Bad Company fans, I had salivated at the prospect of Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers teaming up in The Firm! With that kind of talent, surely the music couldn’t be anything less than brilliant, right? Well… Supergroups always seem like a good idea at the time, but most end up being … Read entire article »

Sirius XM 80s on 8 Top 40 Turkeys of the 1980s

Sirius XM 80s on 8 Top 40 Turkeys of the 1980s

Now for a list of 80s songs that are simultaneously awful and awesome and include a plethora of one-hit wonders (Bob and Doug McKenzie, Bertie Higgins, Taco) along with a gaggle of hits by artists who loaded the Billboard Top 40 with songwriting fodder for years (Paul McCartney, Starship, Olivia Newton John). During the Thanksgiving weekend of 2011, SiriusXM’s 80s on 8 station played their Top 40 “Turkeys” of the 1980s. Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, Nina … Read entire article »

Oh Babe What Would You Say – Hurricane Smith

Oh Babe What Would You Say – Hurricane Smith

Author’s note: Let’s take a break from heavy metal one-hit wonders and take a look at this little ditty, almost forgotten now but when it was a hit, it was one of those songs that embedded itself in your ear like an annoying mosquito, and you just couldn’t get the stupid thing out of your head. The seed for this article was sown during an overnight trip I took recently, and as I pulled out … Read entire article »
