Sirius XM 80s on 8 Top 40 Turkeys of the 1980s

Now for a list of 80s songs that are simultaneously awful and awesome and include a plethora of one-hit wonders (Bob and Doug McKenzie, Bertie Higgins, Taco) along with a gaggle of hits by artists who loaded the Billboard Top 40 with songwriting fodder for years (Paul McCartney, Starship, Olivia Newton John). During the Thanksgiving weekend of 2011, SiriusXM’s 80s on 8 station played their Top 40 “Turkeys” of the 1980s. Alan Hunter, Mark Goodman, Nina … Read entire article »

Take a Little Rhythm – Ali Thomson

Take a Little Rhythm – Ali Thomson

This song is a great example of why I write about one-hit wonders and the charms of these long-forgotten gems. I haven’t heard “Take a Little Rhythm” since about 1981. It’s a great example of a song that lights up the airwaves for a few weeks or even months. But five years later people vaguely remember it. Twenty-plus years later and it’s merely a musical footnote. That’s a shame, because “Take a Little Rhythm” has … Read entire article »

Whirly Girl – OXO

Whirly Girl – OXO

A big slab of peppy 1980s pop music for you today. “Whirly Girl” by OXO is one of the bounciest ditties ever to grace the Billboard Top 40. We haven’t counted how many times they say “Whirly Girl” in the song. But it’s a lot. A whole lot. The song was originally about a “Worldly Girl” but adding that “d” to the mix made the chorus too chunky and difficult to song. So they abbreviated it … Read entire article »

1980s Music Videos by Year – Long Live MTV

The 1980s was a great era for one-hit wonders. And though we cherish and honor these slices of pure goodness (and badness), sometimes it’s nearly as much fun to soak in the overall 1980s vibe with bands that are the furthest thing from one-hit wonders. So today, ease your way back with us to the entire decade that featured big drums, big hair, big colors and big songs. It all makes you wonder where music would … Read entire article »

80s Music Hits That Are Remakes and Cover Versions

80s Music Hits That Are Remakes and Cover Versions

The 1980s were packed with cover versions of earlier hits. Sometimes these remakes were from one-hit wonder bands. Sometimes they’re not. For instance, “Venus” was originally recorded by Dutch band Shocking Blue. It was their only brush with the Top 40. Bananarama later covered Venus and turned it into a massive hit in the late 1980s. Here’s another example: Brownsville Station recorded “Smoking in the Boy’s Room” for their 1973 album Yeah. That version hit … Read entire article »
