10:15 Saturday Night – The Cure

10:15 Saturday Night – The Cure

Editor’s note: This song is not a one-hit wonder. In fact, “10:15 Saturday Night” never even charted on the Billboard Hot 100. Once in a while I write about songs that pop in my heads and become earworms (in other words, they lodge in my head and won’t get out until I write about these songs). “10:15 Saturday Night” is a brilliant song by a brilliant band that is not even remotely close to a … Read entire article »

My Pal Foot Foot – The Shaggs

My Pal Foot Foot – The Shaggs

You may hate me for this one. Or you may find this song’s charms undeniably seductive. If that’s the case, however, I really have to prescribe anti-depression medicine.  Regardless of your opinion, “My Pal Foot Foot” by The Shaggs is in my head and won’t relent. So I’m subjecting you to its, er, charms.  The story of this little ditty (and album) is equal parts charming and bizarre.  The strange but true story of The Shaggs In 1969, the Wiggins sisters — … Read entire article »

Train in Vain – The Clash

Train in Vain – The Clash

My recent post about “Picture Book” by The Kinks led my internal jukebox directly to “Train in Vain” by The Clash. Perhaps it’s the British working-class connection. Or maybe it’s the hummable hook. But I’m not complaining. “Train in Vain” is a bona-fide classic from The Clash’s 1979 record London Calling. I can make a strong case that every person in America and England should own London Calling. It’s not a perfect album. But it’s a great … Read entire article »

Wake Up – The Arcade Fire

Wake Up – The Arcade Fire

Yet another posting by regular contributor Matt Thurston. You can also read his reviews of Elton John’s “Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters” or “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen or his description of the curse of being Michael Jackson’s younger brother Jermaine. Two months ago I was sitting in a movie theater as the lights dimmed to black and the screen turned to that familiar deep shade of emerald green. Before I could read the words that appeared … Read entire article »

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi – Radiohead

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi – Radiohead

Editor’s note: Radiohead is not a one-hit wonder. But Weird Fishes is a great song. I drove down a canyon late last night after a full day of fishing. It was dark. I passed at least 70 deer on the side of the road whose wary eyes served as constant warning to slow down. My windows were open. Radiohead was playing in the speakers. I heard “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” in a whole new way. The propulsive beat transformed what has always … Read entire article »

Caught by the River – Doves

Caught by the River – Doves

Since hearing about Michael Jackson’s death last Friday, one song has continually run through my head. And it’s not a song by the Jackson 5 or Michael Jackson. It’s “Caught by the River” by Doves from their great 2002 recording, The Last Broadcast. It’s a forelorn ballad about loss. Each time I turn on the TV and see footage of Jackson dancing. Or watch the talking heads ramble on about his changing appearances, courtroom appearances, concert appearances … Read entire article »
