Icky Thump – The White Stripes
So The White Stripes are history. At least that’s what the news on The White Stripes website says when it reads: The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011, their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live. The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg … Read entire article »

Rehab – Amy Winehouse
Editor’s note: Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27 on July 23, 2011. Sad and quite a waste of raw talent. Sadly, my January 2011 prediction proved prescient. Going out on a limb on this one. I’m predicting Amy Winehouse will remain a one-hit wonder for her 2007 hit “Rehab.” Why is that going out on a limb, you ask? Well, with an artist so supremely gifted like Winehouse, it’s possible and even likely she could … Read entire article »

We Are Golden – Mika
I’ve enjoyed Mika’s music since I discovered this guy with the Freddie Mercury/George Michael pipes in 2007. The boy can sing and write a decent pop song. And “We Are Golden” from his 2009 release titled The Boy Who Knew Too Much is full of decent pop songs. He’s also amazingly flamboyant and clearly has an affinity for stylish footwear (see video below). But the real reason “We Are Golden” is in my head today is … Read entire article »
Grace Kelly – Mika
Once in a while I hear a song and I’m certain it’s a dead rock star singing from the grave. Even when I know it’s NOT the dead singer singing from the other side my judgment tells me no, “It’s really that guy.” Take “Grace Kelly” by Mika, for instance. Close your eyes and you will swear it’s Freddie Mercury, enigmatic singer of Queen who has been dead since 1991. Try it yourself. Click the video below, … Read entire article »
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi – Radiohead
Editor’s note: Radiohead is not a one-hit wonder. But Weird Fishes is a great song. I drove down a canyon late last night after a full day of fishing. It was dark. I passed at least 70 deer on the side of the road whose wary eyes served as constant warning to slow down. My windows were open. Radiohead was playing in the speakers. I heard “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” in a whole new way. The propulsive beat transformed what has always … Read entire article »
The Gift – Angels and Airwaves
Editor’s note: The Gift by Angels and Airwaves is not a one-hit wonder. Angels and Airwaves reached #55 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “The Adventure” in 2006. But today, I’m simply celebrating the band’s attempts to sound like stadium-filling rock stars and their anthemic song, “The Gift.” Many bands want to be U2. They want the fame. They want the acclaim. They want to be rock deity even as Bono decides he’ll simply be content … Read entire article »
