Weird Fishes/Arpeggi – Radiohead

radiohead_in_rainbows_official_coverEditor’s note: Radiohead is not a one-hit wonder. But Weird Fishes is a great song.

I drove down a canyon late last night after a full day of fishing. It was dark. I passed at least 70 deer on the side of the road whose wary eyes served as constant warning to slow down. My windows were open. Radiohead was playing in the speakers.

I heard “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” in a whole new way.

The propulsive beat transformed what has always been a compelling song into the perfect driving song. Remove the drums and “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” is actually a very mellow, atmospheric tune (as evidenced by the drum-less bridge during the middle section of the song). But last night, the incessent drums pounding out a driving beat kept me focused on the road and away from the literal minefield of car-busting, fender-squashing, night-owl deer on a late-night graze.

I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I understand now why “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” is #17 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Best Songs of 2007.

You can find “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” on In Rainbows.

Thank you Waterdog for bringing Radiohead up. This is an amazing song from an amazing album from an amazing band. Luckily, there still are bands producing interesting and innovative music. A very talented group of folks and one of my favorite bands – certainly in the top 3.

Their concert in Santa Barbara last fall was amazing. I was in bliss. My wife doesn’t appreciate Radiohead as much, but tolerated my whims by going down with me. NPR’s reviewer stated the following: “Radiohead’s show at the Santa Barbara Bowl came as close for musicianship and creativity as any show I’ve seen in 37 years. I’ve seen a lot of shows.”

If you want to check out (and download) the entire concert, look on NPR’s website. Just search for All Things Considered / Radiohead.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
