The inspiration is a question by one-hit wonders fan, Jane Doe 123 (somehow I think that is not Jane’s name on her birth certificate) where she asks:
“What was that one song ( I don’t know the name or artist/band ) where in the music video he is in the arms of some fuzzy creature, or in another scene he is on a bed with a white leather one-piece suit? I know it sounds strange, but I just can’t remember the song!!”
Savvy video watcher and listener Yeahhh Buddy (yet another stage name) responded:
“I Believe in a Thing Called Love by The Darkness.”
Ding, ding, ding. Yeahh Buddy has answered this important question and reminded me of one of the greatest, most theatrical rock songs of all time.
This is a video that features lead singer Justin Hawkin singing in falsetto nearly the entire time while parading around a space ship in a white silk shirt that is open to his belt line and pants that are bell-bottom awesome.
When you first watch the video you’re not sure if the band is real or if this is some tongue-in-cheek Saturday Night Live parody.
I assure you it’s not and The Darkness were every bit as awesome and rockin’ and legitimate and theatrical as Freddie Mercury of Queen and Mika.

Glam rock was alive and well in 2003 when The Darkness released this rockin’ anthem from their debut album titled Permission to Land. The song rocketed up the charts in England, reaching #2 on the British singles chart.
In the United States, The Darkness never became as famous as they should have and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” never dented the Billboard Top 40. But in many listener’s eyes, The Darkness is a one-hit wonder and still fondly remembered for one of the greatest guitar anthems of all time.
So let’s honor this British band’s greatness by naming them British one-hit wonders (at least to American listeners).
Think I’m overstating this song’s greatness? Check out this list of honors for “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.”

Rock on, my friends. The ghost of Freddie Mercury lives on in Justin Hawkins. Thanks for giving the world this rock one-hit wonder.
