Dancing in the Moonlight – King Harvest

“Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest is a great, great song. It’s a perfectly breezy early 1970s A.M. radio hit that reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.

Its distinctive Wurlitzer organ kicks off the short little jam that is about, well, dancing in the moonlight. And this song features some of the grooviest lyrics ever written:

Everybody here is out of sight
They don’t bark and they don’t bite
They keep things loose, they keep it tight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

King Harvest released a few singles and records, and like many great one-hit wonder bands, broke up. But “Dancing in the Moonlight” lives on in oldies compilations and the many cover versions of this early ’70s classic.

In 2009, British band Toploader released a cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight” that reached No. 19 on the British charts but didn’t make the Billboard Top 40. Those young lads recognized a great song.

Dancing in the Moonlight Lyrics

We get it on most every night
When that moon is big and bright
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

Everybody here is out of sight
They don’t bark and they don’t bite
They keep things loose, they keep it tight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

We like our fun and we never fight
You can’t dance and stay uptight
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody was dancing in the moonlight

CHORUS

We get it on most every night
And when that moon is big and bright
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight

Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight
