Ain’t That Enough – Teenage Fanclub
I have to thank Mike Phillips for this discovery. Mike (who is possibly the most stylish dresser I know) and I worked together a few years ago and he was always plying me with new music. Some of it great, some of it not-so-great, but all of it interesting.
One great band he introduced to me one late afternoon is Teenage Fanclub. They’re a Scottish band and write harmony-drenched power pop songs. I think it’s always best to be a Scottish band. They gave the world Bay City Rollers, which really should be enough. But they also gave the world The Cocteau Twins, Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian, KT Tunstall, Annie Lennox (remember Eurythmics) and Simple Minds (“Don’t You Forget About Me”…long live the memory of John Hughes).
I like Scottish bands.
I also like the bagpipe. But only in mixed company.
Teenage Fanclub has released eight albums in their twenty-year career. My favorite by far is titled Songs from Northern Britain from 1997. It’s like a lost Byrds album. Great songs. Fantastic harmonies. If you like the Byrds or The Eagles, you’ll like it. Rolling Stone magazine hated it. I like it. A lot.
Then again, I admitted I like the bagpipe, so take the recommendation for what it’s worth.

“Ain’t That Enough” lyrics
If you can I wish you would
Only if you feel you should
Bring your loving over
All adds up with circumstance
All stood up with taking stands
Bring your loving over
Highlights glisten
Silence listens
Days that found you
Embrace that found you
Chorus
Here is a sunrise Aint that enough
True as a clear sky, ain’t that enough
Toy town feelings here to remind you
Summers in the city do what you gotta do
Time can only make demands
Fill it up with grains of sand
Bring your loving over
Highlights glisten
Silence listens
Days that found you
Embrace that found you
Chorus
Here is a sunrise Aint that enough
True as a clear sky, ain’t that enough
Toy town feelings here to remind you
Summers in the city do what you gotta do
Toy town feelings whose gonna argue
Summers in the city Summers in the city
