They can be protest songs and anti-protest protest songs like “Eve of Destruction” and “Dawn of Correction.”

Sometimes they can even be the most unlikely of hits like “Amazing Grace” by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

They all are unlikely pop songs that become hit songs against all good sense, reason and sometimes, taste.

Then there are songs like “What the World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin and John” by Tom Clay that nearly defy description.

Is this a pop song?

A protest song?

A novelty song?

“What the World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin and John” was pieced together by New York disc jockey Tom Clay in 1971 and includes snippets of the John and Robert Kennedy assassinations. The sounds of a military platoon marching. And a small child answering the question “What is prejudice?” by stating “I think it’s when someone is sick.”

All set against the background of Burt Bacharach’s “What the World Needs Now is Love” and “Abraham, Martin and John.”

Yep, it’s that odd.

I can’t make this stuff up.
