We Are Golden – Mika
I’ve enjoyed Mika’s music since I discovered this guy with the Freddie Mercury/George Michael pipes in 2007. The boy can sing and write a decent pop song. And “We Are Golden” from his 2009 release titled The Boy Who Knew Too Much is full of decent pop songs. He’s also amazingly flamboyant and clearly has an affinity for stylish footwear (see video below).
But the real reason “We Are Golden” is in my head today is because the chorus is a note-for-note rip-off of Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 mega hit “Heaven is a Place on Earth.” Listen closely and tell me if I’m wrong.
“Heaven is a Place on Earth” was Carlisle’s only #1 Billboard hit. “We Got the Beat” topped out at #2 and “Vacation” hit #8. So this was Belinda’s big hit of a lifetime.
Again, listen to the chorus to hear the creative theft. Both catchy pop songs. But Belinda, you deserve a royalty check from Mr. Mika.
Waste a few minutes more and check out “Grace Kelly” by Mika.

Yup. Same song.
Belinda Carlisle was hot!
Hmm… not hearing the similarities everyone else seems to hear… are you referring to the melodies in
the choruses being similar or the background chord progressions?
Rin Tin Earz,
Listen to the opening lines of the two songs. The melodies are exact duplications of each other. Compare the opening melodies below. I bet you’ll hear the theft.
Mika:
Teenage dreams in a teenage circus
Running around like a clown on purpose
Who gives a damn about the family you come from?
No giving up when youre young and you want some
Belinda:
Ooh, baby, do you know what that’s worth
Ooh heaven is a place on earth
They say in heaven love comes first
We’ll make heaven a place on earth
