Pilot of the Airwaves – Charlie Dore
One-hit wonders are a guilty pleasure. “Pilot of the Airwaves” is a perfect example of late-1970s pop music that was “hit today and gone tomorrow.” I doubt this song has been played on a radio station in 20 years. But for a few weeks in the early 1980s, “Pilot of the Airwaves” was a bona-fide hit for Charlie Dore.
I had completely forgotten about the song until tonight when it popped in my head. I had to Google “Pilot of the Airwaves” to even remember who sang this valentine to radio DJs who played the hits for adoring listeners who irrationally fell in love with their voices and thought these disembodied voices on the radio were their friends.

Charlie Dore only had one hit of her own. However, she didn’t stop with “Pilot of the Airwaves.” She also unleashed “Strut
” by Sheena Easton on the world in 1984. So now “Strut” is in my head too. Damn you earworms!

Sheena’s “Strut” still has some earworm charm, but “Pilot of the Airwaves”… ooof, there’s a reason that song hasn’t been played on the radio in 20+ years. Yikes.
Matt, I absolutely agree. “Pilot of the Airwaves” is a really, really lame song. But surprisingly it’s available on a bunch of compilations. The funniest one is “80s Monster Ballads.” You can find it on iTunes and it includes a mix of big-hair bands like Kix, Poison, Warrant, L.A. Guns, Cinderella, Berlin, Starship, Leif Garret AND Charlie Dore.
Who in their right mind would ever put these bands together on one CD? More important, Who would actually buy it?
That’s the charm of the earworm. There’s about as much logic to the songs that pop in my head as there are to the artist mix on “80s Monster Ballads.” It’s schizophrenic at best.
Glad to see you enjoyed “Strut” as well.
