Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire – David Foster

If you played the keyboards or piano in the 1980s, you learned the “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” by David Foster.” Why? One big reason. The girls loved it. It made you appear sensitive and in-touch with the feminine psyche. At least that’s how it remember it now.

Back then, it may have been because Demi Moore starred in St. Elmo’s Fire and she was the sexiest woman in the land (her voice alone could melt any teenager’s heart). If I learned how to play this instrumental one-hit wonder by David Foster, I might actually someday meet Demi and impress her with my wicked piano skillz.

That never happened.

But I did watch St. Elmo’s Fire about 100 times on VHS in countless friends’ basements. With dates, of course. A bunch of guys would never watch that “chick flick” alone.

The early 1980s were a golden era for instrumental one-hit wonders. In 1982 alone you had “Hooked on Swing” and “Hooked on Classics” both charting in the same year. Then Vangelis blew the roof off the instrumental one-hit wonder glass ceiling when the theme to Chariots of Fire hit the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fast forward to 1985 and you discover two more huge instrumental one-hit wonders: “Axel F” by Harold Faltermeyer and “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” by David Foster.

Foster has been a hit-maker for decades and has won 15 Grammy Awards. Amazingly, though he has spent months on the Billboard charts with other bands, when the “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” hit #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985, that marked his only solo entry in the Billboard Top 40.

Looking back on it all, St. Elmo’s Fire didn’t age all that well. Demi Moore, on the other hand, did. In fact, she seems to defy age through a mix of luck, great genetics and some artful plastic surgery.

As for David Foster, he will forever have my respect as a hit-meister and deserving member of the Songwriting Hall of Fame.

I'm an obsessive music collector, cataloger, commenter and trivia nut. Sometimes I'm even a listener. One-hit wonders have always been a guilty pleasure.
