In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry

We love summer. Who doesn’t? And we’ve always loved “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry. It’s one of many classic summer songs that are breezy, easy and always evoke sunburns, shades, friends, fun, and yes, even one-hit wonders.

The original version of “In the Summertime” was released by British band Mungo Jerry in 1970 and became a worldwide smash, reaching #1 in a number of countries and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the U.S.

What’s not to like? A killer hook on the piano. Simple, sing-a-long lyrics. It all conspired to make one of the biggest-selling songs of all time with estimated sales between 5 and 10 million copies. Somehow we think the characters of Mungo Jerry are pretty proud of themselves.

Fast forward to 1995, and hip hop artist Shaggy took his version of “In the Summertime” to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The summer of 2010 saw another take on this classic hit, with Disney singers Zeke and Luther belting out their version of “In the Summertime.”

These cover versions are fun, but nothing tops the original by Mungo Jerry. That’s the one we turn up when we tie on our roller skates and take a spin around the block.
