That’s Not My Name – The Ting Tings

We started nothing by the Ting TingsGreat pop songs have killer hooks. They might be lyrical (see “Whoomp There It Is” by Tag Team).

They might be musical (see “Groove is in the Heart” by Deee-Lite).

They might be so simple they’re literally a chant (see “Mickey” by Toni Basil).

But whatever it is, the song gets in your head and won’t leave.

“That’s Not My Name” by The Ting Tings covers all the bases. A killer but basic instrumental hook conjures up the sounds of “Whip It” by Devo.

Throw in a chanted chorus of “That’s not my name/that’s not my name/that’s not my name.”

Then add an attractive female lead singer to the mix while an equally attractive male drummer pounds the skins and you’ve got indie cred as well since you’ve conjured up the mirrored reflection of fellow two-piece band and one-hit wonder The White Stripes who hit the Billboard Top 40 with “Icky Thump” in 2007.

It’s a recipe for a massive hit–just not in the United States where “That’s Not My Name” only managed to hit #39 on the Billboard Top 40 in 2008. In England, however, The Ting Tings hit #1.

Still, with the inclusion of “That’s Not My Name” in Just Dance 2, the breakout Wii video game, you’ve got a song that will drive itself into your inner psyche like some relentless earworm. And yes, you’ll love every minute of it.

The Ting Tings are a British band who seems destined to hit the charts yet again. But it has been more than three years since they first hit the Billboard Top 40 and, while we hold out hope they will crack the charts with another hit, we’re not holding our breath. It feels a bit like a novelty song. Time will tell.

And you know what? The Ting Tings are probably just fine with that since their records continue to sell and they continue to captivate festival crowds with their distinctive sound.

The only thing I wonder is why I never thought of pairing myself with a chick lead singer and writing songs as simple as: This is my spork/This is my spork/This is my spork.

Or I could have written: That is my sandwich, yo/That is my sandwich, yo/That is my sandwich, yo (a little hip-hop flavor always helps).

Sometimes brilliance is really that simple.
