Laffy Taffy – D4L

Some songs burst onto the music scene, make a huge impact, reach #1 on the Billboard Top 40, and forever afterwards are considered some of the worst songs ever.

That seems to be the story of “Laffy Taffy” by D4L that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006 and was fueled by big online sales and a video that featured bikini beauties in a water fight.

High art here, folks.

The lyrics are, well, simple and relatively sexist. Unless you consider asking a woman/stripper to shake her “laffy taffy” empowering.

Girl shake that laffy taffy
That laffy taffy
Shake that laffy taffy
That laffy taffy
Girl shake that laffy taffy
That laffy taffy
That laffy taffy (candy girl)
That laffy taffy

It’s a stupid song that was stupidly successful. It sounds like thousands of other hip-hop one-hit wonders and popular hip-hop songs. Matthew Wilkening of AOL Radio rates “Laffy Taffy” #44 on his list of the 100 Worst Songs Ever.

I won’t disagree. In fact, I’m placing it on my growing list of worst one-hit wonders where it joins such luminaries as “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baja Men and “Feelings” by Morris Albert.

But that retrospective scorn didn’t stop people from lapping up this rap song to the point that it made Atlanta-based D4L hip-hop one-hit wonders. It also helped DL4’s debut album titled Down for Life reach #22 on the Billboard album charts.

A follow-up single titled Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me was released in 2006 but only reached #72 on the Billboard Hot 100.

D4L was finished. But Laffy Taffy lives on as one of only 7 one-hit wonders to reach #1 on the Billboard Top 40 between 2000 and 2009.

I'm an obsessive music collector, cataloger, commenter and trivia nut. Sometimes I'm even a listener. One-hit wonders have always been a guilty pleasure.
