“It Takes Two” by Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock proves a song doesn’t even have to break the Top 30 to become a legend. Number 36 is good enough.
Originally released as a single in 1988, “It Takes Two” started a slow climb up the Billboard charts, ultimately reaching #36 on the Billboard Top 40.
Smelling money and success, the boys quickly produced an entire album titled It Takes Two that sold more than 1 million copies and reached #31 on the Billboard Album Charts. A second single was released titled “Joy and Pain” that reached #58. But “It Takes Two” was the hip-hop group’s shining moment.
Most important, “It Takes Two” made Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock hip-hop one-hit wonders.
Like far too many one-hit wonder artists, personal issues, creative disagreements and bad karma resulted in Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock splitting up just one year later. But the legend of “It Takes Two” with it’s famous samples from James Brown and Lyn Collins still pulls people onto the dance floor and is used in settings as diverse as the video game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to romantic comedy The Proposal starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.
The song has legs. Play it loud and dance to the song that is considered the following by the venerable VH1:
- #18 on VH1’s 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80
- #37 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop
- #80 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 80s
