Heaven (must be there) – Eurogliders

eurogliders-this-islandWhen I was in high school, a friend went to Australia to play basketball. He returned with a cassette tape of an album titled This Island by an Aussie band called Eurogliders. It was either 1983 or 1984.

Six months later I heard the first track from the record titled “Heaven (Must Be There) on my local new wave station. A great little station called KCGL in Salt Lake City, Utah that was one of the earliest new wave/modern music stations in the country. True story. Think of it as KRQO in Utah and you have a pretty good idea of the sound.

But I digress.

“Heaven (Must Be There)” is a cheery little pop song. You don’t hear it on the radio often (if ever) these days. But it’s classic 1980s pop that goes down easily like a glass of cold water. Both are equally harmless but good for your soul.

We consider “Heaven (Must Be There)” a one-hit wonder even though it never broke the Billboard top 40. But it did reach #21 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts in 1984 (that chart became the Modern Rock chart in the late 1980s to accomodate the growth of alternative/modern rock singles that were huge on college radio and alternative rock stations, but typically didn’t break into mainstream tastes. Yes, the irony of the Mainstream Rock charts focusing on alternative music is not lost on me).

So raise a glass to Eurogliders for their one-hit wonder smash, “Heaven (Must Be There).

“Heaven (Must Be There)” Lyrics by Eurogliders

Oooooh! Ooh I want to find a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I’m searching for a better place

Oooooh! Ooh I’m tired of living in the sand
Oooooh! Ooh I’m searching for a better land

Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere
I’ve never – never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place

Oooooh! Ooh I’m always trying to escape
Oooooh! Ooh I never know which road to take

Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere
I’ve never, never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place

CHORUS
Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere
I’ve never, never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place

Live in this place

Live in this place, this place

Oooooh! Ooh I want to find a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I’m searching for a better place

Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere
I’ve never, never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place (don’t wanna live)

Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere (must be there-ere)
I’ve never, never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place

Heaven, must be there-ere
Well, it’s just got to be there-ere (must be there-ere)
I’ve never, never seen Eden
I don’t wanna live in this place (fade)

Loved hearing this song on KCGL /KJQ back in the 80s. Ah, those were the days …

    Matthew,

So true. Two great radio stations that were well before their time. It’s hard for kids today to even imagine what “alternative” music would sound like since they have access to all music genres all the time. In 1984 you could listen to bands like Toto or Michael Jackson or Phil Collins or Bruce Springsteen or Van Halen or…you get the picture.

Or you could change the dial to KCGL and hear underground bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Eurogliders, New Order, Violent Femmes. We were lucky kids to have access to artists like these when most of America didn’t.
